GNYHA Testifies at New York City Council Hearing on Resident Wellness

September 27, 2021

The New York City Council Committee on Hospitals held an oversight hearing last week on “NYC Interns and Residents’ Wellness and Health.” GNYHA Senior Vice President Tim Johnson’s testimony addressed work hours regulations, member hospital activities to support resident wellbeing, and GNYHA initiatives to help interns and residents and promote wellness. GNYHA’s Clinician Well-being Advisory Group has been convening since April 2020, providing a forum for hospital wellness officers and others to share ideas and learn from experts how to promote wellness and reduce burnout for clinicians, including interns and residents. GNYHA is also working on additional initiatives to specifically support the graduate medical education community among member teaching hospitals.

NYC Health + Hospitals (H+H) leadership testified about H + H’s programs to promote resident wellness, and residents in training at H+H shared ideas on how to improve the learning environment. I. Michael Leitman, MD, who oversees all Mount Sinai Health System medical residency training, testified about Mount Sinai’s efforts to promote resident wellness.
